The Spatial Simulation research group aims to gain a better understanding of process-pattern relationships in complex systems by the means of generative modelling approaches. Digital representations of our world commonly prioritise either the spatial or the temporal dimension as their primary frame of reference. To overcome this limitation, Spatial Simulation integrates pattern-oriented with process oriented views by referring to individuals as their basic modelling entity. This disaggregated view of dynamic processes builds on concepts of Complexity Theory and allows to establish causal links between spatio-temporal patterns and their underlying processes. We study spatial process dynamics in a range of different domains, including ecology, transport, and hydrology.
